At the movies
Watching the Oscars this week reminded me of how much I love movies. For me, there's nothing better than settling down in a seat in a theatre, filled with promise. Escaping reality for 90 or more minutes. Being absorbed in another world, time or place. Laughing, crying, feeling fear and love.
I especially love going to the movies by myself. I know this sounds strange to a lot of people, but I love being able to throw myself into a film wholeheartedly. Not being distracted by the person next to me or having to dissect the movie once it's finished. Though seeing the right kind of flick with a friend can be a lot of fun too. I love taking my kids to movies and watching their little faces as their drawn into the screen.
Watching a movie curled up on the couch on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon is the next best thing.
Once upon a lifetime ago, I studied film at Uni, with the intention of working in the film industry. I'm not really quite sure what happened to that dream, I guess life got in the way. My first job in journalism though was writing movie reviews and synopses. I couldn't believe I was being paid to watch movies and write about them.
These days I don't go to the movies so much and tend to fall asleep during most films at home. Still, there's nothing better than that feeling of anticipation as the title credits begin to roll.
Love going to the movies as well although these days its more watching movies on DVD as we can see more movies for our money.
ReplyDeleteWhen we do go to the movies we usually love going to the cheap Cineplex ones (our closest is South Bank Bris).
If any one is interested in checking out their prices they can do so here

But even htough the tickets are cheap for $13.00 I can rent 4 dvd movies compared to going to see the one movie on the big screen.
I usually save the big screen for movies I really love like Johnny Depp in the latest pirate movie in May this year on the big screen
(((( Hugs )))) XXXX Kisses XXXX
I like going to the movies on my own as well. Have not done for for quite a while. It is an hour drive for me to the cinemas (closer one at half hour but the screens are small and the rooms smell of mold). I totally agree with you about getting lost in a film. I love going in the middle of the day and it is so surreal when you emerge into the light. I save going to the cinema for movies with lots of effects such as Avatar or Star Trek. I like to watch the more emotional ones at home cause I can really get into them there and cry and laugh etc in the comfort of my own home. Cheers, Wendy
ReplyDeleteI love a movie on a cold rainy day when you can curl up on the sofa and escape for 90mins. Going out to the cinemas is so expensive but it does make it more of an event when you watch on the big screen.
ReplyDelete...btw your past movie review job sounds like a dream if only we could do that for our blogs now and get paid :)
Oooo I love the way you paint that picture of going to the movies or watching a movie at home. I love the dimensions movies are capable of taking me also. Sadly, these days it is more of a luxury if I get to sit through a whole movie uninterrupted... or even rarer still, going to the movies!
ReplyDeleteOne day you should revisit that dream of working in the film industry. It is never too late :o)
