Friday Fun - War Horse

It's the last night of our holiday, sob! It's been so nice. Now time for the long drive home.

The Johnson's Baby winner was Posie Patchwork. Congrats!

-------------------

Recently I was sent a copy of Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse'.

Now I must say from the outset that I'm no fan of animal movies. I like animals out in the wild, not on my screen.

The first thing that struck me about the movie was that it doesn't look like a modern film. The colours and the angles of some of the shots reminded me of epics from the '30s like 'Gone With The Wind'. Sweeping scenes, pink clouds, shadowed silhouettes. You get the feeling straight away that this is going to be an epic.

It's the story of a horse called Joey, who through a series of events travels from the English countryside to war-torn France. The special horse has a series of owners and a unique relationship with each. It's slow-moving but looks fantastic. I was not won over by the horse, but as I said I find it hard to warm to animal 'characters' and relationships on film.

'War Horse' is a film for those who love epics from yesteryear and believe in the special bond we have with our animal friends.

I have three DVD copies of War Horse to giveaway. Just comment below and tell me what your favourite animal character in a movie is and why.
Entries close 11.59pm Thursday May 3, 2012. Open to Aussie residents only.

  1. My favourite animal character would have to be Babe. I grew up watching that movie and there is something about that one line where he sings "La La La" that makes my family and I crack up every time. The fact that the movie was shot in Oz (which I only realised 7 years later :S) is a bonus too!

  2. I don't know if I can narrow it done to just one. I love animal movies. The Fox and the Hound (first movie I ever saw at the cinemas), Babe (we had pet pigs) and Pumba and Timone from the Lion King(as they had attitude).

  4. I just asked Miss Five the question as to who was her favourite 'animal' in a movie and she replied; Animal from The Muppets! Why? Because he plays the drums and he's so funny!

  5. The duck in the under-rated romantic comedy 'Love Birds' (2011). Very cute (and does a great job of bringing the main couple together)!

  6. Hope the drive home wasn't too harrowing Corinne. It's always sad when holiday's come to an end, but it's great you had such a lovely, memorable time.
Oh this looks like a great movie, Scott would love it I am thinking.
I'd have to say Marley, from Marley & Me is my favourite animal character from a movie, he's just adorable... I also like Mr Jinx, the cat in Meet The Parents, he's a character xo

  7. Read the book! Read the book! Movie is based on the book by Michael Morpurgo one of my favourite authors - a children's author he writes incredible books - every single one ( and there are a lot!) is a masterpiece! A children's author that every adult should read! ( pity I am in NZ, but I will be off to look for the DVD of this here, as missed it St the movies in January!) . Sequel is " Farm Boy".

  8. I can't go past a horse in a film. I grew up watching reruns of Phar Lap, Black Beauty and the Black Stallion. Modern movies like Seabiscuit and Secretariat are real tear jerkers. Horses are such beautiful animals, so intelligent, and so graceful.

  9. I love films with Dolphins in them. Flipper was great, and A Dolphins Tale is great as well. Dolphins are so smart, cheeky and always smiling. There's a real connection between humans and dolphins. The fact they can beat up sharks helps too!! :)

  10. Lassie is still one of my favourite films because of the memories it brings back. I love dogs in films, they can be so dependable, playful & create some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. Who doesn't laugh when a dog steals a shoe or bites a mailman!?!

  11. I may be showing my age but I loved Hooch from 'Turner & Hooch'. The mess and drooling from the dog made me laugh. The way Hooch changed his uptight partner's (Tom Hanks) life around shows how an animal can have a big effect in one's life.

  12. I can't go past Bugs Bunny. A fast talking, wise cracking rabbit who filled my tv screen every day after school, and went on to star in his own movies. He even coined a phrase that has crossed into pop culture- What's up doc?!
