I'm bringing sexy back

Like 99.9% of the population, I love music. Just a few notes can transport me back in time, it can bring up a long forgotten emotion or it can lift my mood.

Being a teen in the early '90s means I'm a rock chick with an indie slant. I do love the '60s too and The Beatles will always be my favourite band. Though as I've gotten older, I can pretty much listen to anything without the music snobbery I used to have. Essentially, though, I'm a rock girl. Dance, R&B, rap - they all have their place, just not in my iPod.

Despite this I do have a few skeletons in my musical cupboard. I'm going to just come out and say it. I love Justin Timberlake. As an actor? Not-so-much. As a musical genius? Why, yes, yes I do. It flies in the face of all my musical loves, but for some reason I love him. I even went to his concert a few years back, it was rad. When people I know in real life discover this, they are often perplexed. JT and I aren't a natural match. In fact, I recently said to Skip when we were watching Friends With Benefits, I mean The Social Network: "When is JT going to give up this acting caper and get back to making music?"

Skip and I spend often spend a Friday or a Saturday night listening to music. A few months back we would lose ourselves for hours watching cheesy music videos on Foxtel. More recently we discovered digital radio and we'd be listening to stations across the globe cheering when we found all-Beatle or all-AC/DC radio stations (Skip, not me). In the past few weeks Spotify has rocked our world. OMG! I'm obsessed with Spotify. (If you haven't discovered it yet, I urge you check it out). You can stream pretty much any music you can think of to your computer. AH-mazing.

The thing with Spotify is that it's linked to your Facebook account. So say you do enjoy listening to a little JT but you don't want the world to know about it, well what you listen to can come up on your feed. So while your friends are all listening to cool new music, JT can suddenly pop up and tarnish your image.

So, if you're a Facebook friend and you do see me listening to JT, don't judge. Maybe listen to a little yourself. You never know, you just might like it.

What musical skeletons are in your cupboard? What do you secretly love that would shock the people who know you? C'mon, share, we can't be uber cool all the time. Also, how do you stop Spotify showing what you're listening to?

  1. AC/DC will always be our main fav in this house, I can thank Hubby for getting me hooked onto them.

We even went to their 2010 Australia Black Ice Concert in Brisbane.

  2. I recently discovered Spotify, and it's love. And funny you should mention the whole FB linking in thing too because I was unaware that it would share what I was listening to & next thing I know I'm getting comments about it! Lucky I was listening to something moderately cool (Florence & The Machine) & not something potentially majorly uncool (East 17). As for JT I am the opposite, I think he is an ok actor but avoid his music like the plague ;-)

  3. Oh I love this post! I often embrace my inner dag. Musical snobs shit me. Just own it, people. Own your tragic taste, own the good and own the bad.

I have lots of daggy musical loves. Yes, JT! And Boney M. And some Usher. And some Beyonce. And Jay Z. Timomatic is a fave too. As is Jessica Mauboy.

I even have the Steps best of on my ipod. It's actually not too bad... Did I say that out loud? 5, 6, 7, 8..

I balance it with lots of Foo Fighters and Boy and Bear. And Little Birdie. And Sia. And yes The Beatles and some old school Prince too. See, I'm not completely tragic...

    1. P23, I can always count on you to give me an ear worm. "My boot scootin'baby is driving me crazy. My obsession for a western...." How do I even know that??!!

And tell me this, Steps had so many hits they had to create a Best Of??

      Wow.

  4. Oh Corinne, I love JT too, his music is so funky and gets me grooving every time. He has a really great voice. I haven't actually seen him in any movies yet, but I can imagine he would be better to stick to singing. Now I am really showing how out of touch I am, but I have never heard of spotify... but it sounds great and I'm going to check it out, thanks lovely xo

    1. He's not a terrible actor, but acting is getting in the way of making more funky tunes. The Social Network is a great movie.

  5. I am a closet Jimmy Buffet fan, blame it on my Dad, but I just love a bit of cheeseburger in paradise, oh the shame!! I do love JT too, and reminisce when I hear Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias!
Our Internet I think would spoil my spotify experience with it's slowness, but might have to give it a go, thanks for the tip!

  6. Snap - I fancy a bit of JT myself if I do say so. I have such an eclectic taste in music though from The Buble to Jack Johnson to good old Jazz. I say if it makes you rock your hips and embarass your kids when you sing along - then its all good! xx

  12. Respect for him since he attended the Marine Ball and got to see how genuine he really is. I'm a veteran, a cop, and a father of a teenager - so it takes a lot to get my respect from an actor/musician that's not close to or older than me. Just thought I'd share.

  13. Correction. It's a lot for an actor/musician to get my respect...
