Centre of the world

One of many reasons we moved to Dubai was to travel. Moving to the centre of the world with Europe, Asia and Africa just a few short hours away was very tempting.

In Sydney, traveling overseas with 3 kids requires a lot of planning and a lot of saving. Tickets alone are thousands of dollars, plus living in a city as expensive as Sydney makes saving all the harder. It would be impossible to flit off somewhere for a week's break.

Skip and I have travelled a lot throughout Australia, both by ourselves and with the kids. There are few places we haven't been on the southern continent. So now we feel pretty blessed to have the world at our feet.

We're taking our first trip later this week and to say I'm excited is an understatement. We only decided to go 10 days ago so it all feels a little like a dream. By week's end we'll be somewhere that is as different to Dubai as you can get.

We're going to Austria! There will historic buildings and pork schnitzels and beer. There will be cold weather and mountains. There will be Christmas markets and chocolate cake and choirs. There will be Mozart and the Sound of Music.

So tell me, have you been to Austria? What are the must dos?

  2. Schnapps. The food stalls in the markets are good. Cheese and sausage with good bread...drool.

  4. Salzburg! The birthplace of Mozart, night Christmas markets with a brass band playing Christmas carols, stalls selling mulled wine - heaven!

  5. Oh wow, excitement! My vote is for Salzburg as well, for the reasons listed above as well as for all things Sound of Music :-) It is a beautiful city. Enjoy xx

  6. I love Austria! So happy for you. Even though I loved Salzburg and Vienna, I think Austria is most beautiful out of the cities. Even one hour by a beautiful scenic train trip outside of Vienna to the Danube Valley there are beautiful little towns like Melk. Here is a link to some pics (it is a tour, which I always avoid with kids..but thought it would show you some photos) http://www.viator.com/tours/Vienna/Danube-Valley-Day-Trip-from-Vienna/d454-3585AT008VS

No matter what you do, have a fantastic time!! Austria...then very soon after a visit from Grandma! Fun times!

  7. Yay! Love Austria. Go to Salzburg and go on The Sound of Music Tour :). Drink lots of beer! A visit to Neuschwannstein castle is amazing for its kitschness!
There is a spa in the mountains where you can swim in heated pools in the snow which is fun - will try to think of the name. Austria is just lovely to wander in, you won't get bored. :)

  9. This is one of the reasons I also love living in Dubai. In the past year we have been to Italy, France, Belgium, Oman, and Sri Lanka. I haven't been to Austria but next time you need a short relaxing break I highly recommend Sri Lanka. We are going again for a week in Feb.

Have a fab trip, can't wait to hear about it. You will be missing UAE Day, I am sure all the decorated houses and cars will be keeping you amused this week.
